A common complaint against Microsoft (and indeed any closed-source software company) by the open source zealot movement is that their software is shoddy and open to security breaches. Never mind the fact that Microsoft patches its software very quickly when a leak is discovered and they take direct ownership of the problem. The Rabid Open Sourcers would further have you believe that their software is more secure because, well, because they said so.
And, after all, if the software belongs to the commons, it must be more superior, right?
So, it's with some amusement that I read over at O'Reilly how there's trouble with Perl and host of other open source tools for Linux. Seems that good old open source software suffers the same issues as proprietary. Perl, in particular, suffers a breach where malicious attackers can overwrite files with root permissions or execute malicious code with similar permissions.
Given the advanced age of Perl, it's shocking, SHOCKING that this kind of breach exists now. Now, there is a patch, of course, but I just offer this a public service announcement for those in glass houses. I now return you to your regularly scheduled hyperbole and FUD.
