I’m still not sure I believe what I’m seeing here, but it does make for a compelling case on the effects of vibration on hard disk latency.  The following video was recorded by an engineer at Sun’s OS storage division, Fishworks.

The engineer in this case causes a real-time impact on a drive array’s latency by shouting directly into them.  This is rather interesting and does shed some tantalizing light on “mysterious” problems in the datacentre that could be traced to “rogue” vibrations – maybe even sympathetic harmonics that could be produced by all the equipment in a typical server room.
